The Institute of Communication and Computer Systems (ICCS) is a non-profit private law body associated
with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, which has been established in 1989 by the
Ministry of Education of Greece, in order to promote research and development activity in all diverse
aspects of computer and telecommunications systems and their applications. In FUSION the Information
Management Unit of ICCS will participate whose research is multidisciplinary and focuses on: knowledge
management, semantic web technologies and business application integration.
Previous research experience (European, National)
Some indicative projects of ours include the following:
- the KNOW-NET (Esprit EP28928) project in which we developed a holistic corporate knowledge
management method and tool that integrates content management and collaboration with advanced
search and retrieval
- this solution was further enhanced and tested in the LEVER IST project which helped four user
companies set up knowledge repositories, facilitate knowledge exchange in communities of practice
and implement procedures for capturing and diffusing best practices
- the DECOR project (IST-1999-13002) which developed integrated methods and tools for active,
context-sensitive and self-adaptive delivery of organisational knowledge at the business process level
- the INKASS project (IST-2001-33373) which developed an innovative retrieval facility that builds on
ontology-based mechanisms to explicitly deal with the uncertainty associated to knowledge retrieval,
an electronic contracting system that models the whole lifecycle of e-contracts and supports
negotiation of contract terms and conditions between agents using CBR techniques and a P2P system
that allows navigation and search across B2B marketplaces, displays products and allows
matchmaking of buyer request with available products and services
- the ROCKET (IST-2001-38245) which developed a Strategic Roadmap for future developments in elearning
and knowledge management and prepared the ground for future RTD activities in the 6th
Framework programme
ICCS’s expected benefits from FUSION
ICCS expects to benefit from integrating its research activities with work carried out by the other research
institutes within FUSION. In addition, ICCS intends to actively promote and disseminate the results of
FUSION in the wider knowledge management, e-commerce and business-to-business community. ICCS
has been active in the organisation of various conferences and workshops. For example ICCS was a coorganiser
of the 4th Conference on Knowledge Management in Electronic Government (KMGov2003), it
set-up the “Knowledge Management Initiative” (a not-for-profit initiative dedicated to the advancement of
the state-of-the-art in methods and tools for Knowledge Management in South-Eastern Europe), it
organised the workshop “Knowledge Management and the Learning Organisation" in 2000 and the
conference Knowledge Management for Competitive Advantage in the Digital Economy, in cooperation
with the European IT Services Association in 2001.
